The girls water polo team opened up their season with their first league game on Dec. 19, 2019 against Channel Islands High School. Buena won the hard fought game with a final score of 26-1, starting off with a bang for The Bulldog Nation.
All players for Buena scored with the exception of the goalie,Senior Katie Crane, Senior Emmie Johnstone and Senior Devin Varela both had 4 goals apiece. Crane blocked 3 out of 4 shots, continuing her status as a shutdown goalie. Crane has a record from protecting her side of the team in order to not allowing the other team score.
Varsity took on Oxnard on Dec. 9 and fought hard but lost to Oxnard with a 8-13 final score. This loss was difficult because they lost their undefeated record and became 2-1 in the league. Crane saved 10 blocks during the course of the game showing her power as goalie.
Varsity Pool explained that it has worked towards guiding her team. She loves how “the whole team can can come together in water polo”. Especially guiding her team to collaborate with one another in order to successfully score a goal.
Pool said “seen this year’s team go far because they love to get in the pool and make every practice count before stepping into a game”. These girls bring light to their sport while still maintaining high demands for high school class-work including have good grades to pass also.
On Jan. 17 Girls varsity faced a tough rival, the Ventura Cougars and had a final score of 3-23. This team has demonstrated their ability to play against skilled team and grow as a result of the challenges they have faced. The highs and lows of the season builds strength which will guide the team towards growth and victory.
