As the girl’s soccer team heads into the new season, Amanda Tewes heads into her first season as the head coach for Buena. “It’s very special to me because I did play in this program so it’s like coming in full circle by being the coach,” Tewes said. The Bulldogs have set the bar high this year. Senior Lizzy Payne said, “Our goal is a CIF championship.” Tewes also said, “Our goal is to ultimately win league and CIF.”
The girl’s opened their season with a tough Oaks Christian team on Dec. 5. Jen Ramirez scored a goal assisted by Marissa Saucedo. Then Payne scored the game winning goal to give Buena a 2-1 win.
Buena then faced Westlake and earned a 4-0 win. Payne and Saucedo both had 1 goal and 1 assist. After Westlake, they faced Oak Park. They lost the game 1-2 however Payne scored another goal for her third of the year. When asked what challenges her team will face, Tewes said, “they will face good opponents so staying focused towards our ultimate goals.”
The girl’s followed that with a statement win over Nordoff 7-0. Sydney Pujol and Saucedo each had 2 goals. Payne extended her goal streak to 4 games. When asked what motivates you to coach every day, Tewes responded, “Having a good group of girls that are fun and motivated and giving back to a program that I’ve taken pride in since I was 14.”
They added another win against San Marcos 2-0. Saucedo scored both goals. Then added to two more wins against Pacifica and Saugus. That would earn them a spot in the championship game of the Holiday tournament.
Buena played Foothill for the tournament championship and won 2-1. This put them at a record of 7-1 to start the season which is an outstanding mark.
When asked how being an athlete makes you a better person, Payne responded, “I’m more respectful.” Payne is planning to attend a four year college to play soccer but has not decided where yet. However, Saucedo has committed to the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Everyone is super excited and proud to see what these girls will do. But for now, they have their mind on only thing, and that is a ring.
